The GMN meander spring (suffix "M") allows an indexing frequency of up to 60 Hz and is therefore particularly suitable for use as an indexing clutch. The GMN tension spring (suffix "Z") has a lower spring force, which results in a longer service life when used as a backstop.

Freewheel insert elements (type FE) generally require mating parts (shaft and hub) made of hardened and ground steel for torque transmission. Freewheel clutches with raceways are generally suitable.

Freewheels generally need bearing support. They are not self-centering.
If a bearing which defines the gap between the mating parts is already available, FE or FR type insert elements elements can be used.
If no bearing is available, GMN ball bearing clutches series FK(N)(N), or GMN complete unit series FP(D) and FN(D) with an integrated bearing are an outstanding solution.

Press-fit or keyed joints are available for all freewheel clutches with rings. We generally recommend a press-fit connection for perfect torque transmission.

Freewheel clutches must generally be lubricated with a suitable lubricant. Sealed GMN ball bearing clutches (series FK(N)(N) 2RS) are equipped with permanent grease lubrication. Sealed GMN complete units (FPD and FND series) have lifetime oil filling.

GMN Freewheel clutches can be used up to 110°C.
A max. of 160°C is allowed for open designs.

Be careful with types offered with plastic cages:
The FE 422 Z, FE 423 Z, FE 432 Z and FE 453 Z series, as well as all GMN complete units which contain these installed items as components, as well as all GMN ball bearing clutches have a plastic cage as standard, which can be used at up to a maximum of 140°C.
