Labyrinth metal seal

Metallic materials of GMN seal components series L/M guarantee highest resistance against coarse and fine contamination.

Metallic materials are suitable for temperatures up to 200 °C.

Series L/M

Design L

The L design is particularly suited for use with normal spray load for rotating shafts and hubs.

 

Technical data:
  • Outer ring: Aluminum (GD AlSi 12)
  • Inner ring: Non-alloy steel
  • Range of temperature: -40 °– 200 °C
  • Shaft diameter: 15 – 210 mm 
  • Width: 10, 14, 15, 20, 22 mm (depending on size)
  • Gap height: Constantly 0.2 – 0.5 mm (depending on size)
  • Sealing gap: Horizontal
  • Axial play: Sax see table of dimensions (total axial movement from one end position to the other)
  • Increased axial clearance: Sax – 1.5 x Sax (on request all types are also available with increased axial play) order name: L dxDxB with increased axial play
  • Radial clearance: Srad = Sax /tan (42.5°)

Design M with drainage groove

The M design has grooves on the circumference which are used to remove and return penetrated liquid during heavy and direct spray impact.

The small distance between the outer and inner ring of just approx. 0.2–0.5 mm guarantees a high sealing effect and highly effective protection from fouling.

Because no friction heat is generated, neither the seal nor the adjacent components or the lubricant are subjected to thermal loads.

  • Efficient

The frictionless design enables operation without performance losses. This means that the seal offers maximum sealing effect with reduced energy consumption even at high speeds.

  • Compact

GMN labyrinth seals achieve 2–4-layered labyrinths in the smallest space.

  • Effective

The low gap height creates an air cushion in the sealing gap at high circumferential speeds that increases the sealing effect.

  • Return

Drainage grooves on the outer ring return any penetrated liquids (M design).

Surrounding structure (connecting parts)

Tolerances

Housing: K7, Shaft: h 6

Surface quality: Rz  ≤ 16 µm; Ra  ≤ 3.2 µm

Installation

“l” length (chamfering of shaft and housing) depending on the width “W”: l = 0.1 x W

Aluminum outer ring

The aluminum outer ring can be slightly non-round in delivery condition. When the seal is pressed in, the relatively easily malleable ring adapts to the roundness of the hub again.

For production-related reasons, the outer ring can be up to 0.1 mm wider than the inner ring.

GMN labyrinth metal seals are pressed with a calibrating ring (“zero dimension”). The outer ring then springs back again due to its elasticity.

Tandem arrangement (L design)

Two metal seals positioned next to each other guarantee absolute leak-tightness with an intermediate drain hole (distance min. 5 mm). Liquid between the seals is drained off reliably.

Seals with drainage groove (M design)

In limited spaces that do not permit a tandem arrangement, the M model offers a compromise in compact design. Penetrated liquids are removed via grooves in the outer ring into a ring groove in the housing.

Width of the ring groove in the customer part: R = c + 1 mm (c = groove width)
